Donald Trump returned to Washington yesterday to rally the support of Republican representatives and business circles after his unprecedented criminal conviction as part of his trial in New York related to paying money to silence an actress, as part of what is known as the “buying silence” case.
The former president, the presidential candidate, held separate closed sessions with members of the House of Representatives in a private club near the Capitol, as part of his efforts to confront Joe Biden next November.
He is scheduled to meet with senators at their nearby campaign headquarters, and he will also address the CEOs of dozens of companies.
This is the first meeting that Trump has held with representatives on Capitol Hill since he left the White House in 2021.
This comes as part of his first visit to Washington since he was convicted in New York last May of all 34 criminal charges related to falsifying business records.
A Trump campaign spokeswoman told Agence France-Presse: The meetings will focus on “securing the southern border and reducing taxes on hard-working families in order to restore the booming economy since President Trump’s first term.”
The party has rallied around its candidate since the convictions were issued, with many MPs criticizing a judicial system they accused of being biased against conservatives. Trump faces more than 50 other criminal charges.
The Republicans in the House of Representatives face a difficult battle to maintain control of it in the upcoming November elections, the results of which are expected to be close, whether for the presidential vote or the Senate and House elections.
But the situation may be better for the “Republicans” in the Senate, as they seem confident in their ability to change the situation in the Senate because they now hold 49 seats compared to 51 for the “Democrats.”
