The Civil Guard is still looking for the third person involved in the event, which took place on August 16 in a place next to the river
The Civil Guard and the Local Police continue to search for the third young man who, in the early hours of August 16, along with two others already under investigation, had committed a gang rape of a 50-year-old woman from Cieza. The event took place in the area of the river bank, very close to the Iron Bridge, according to the complaint that the victim filed the following morning at the Benemérita offices.
The three young people, of North African origin and between 22 and 25 years old, allegedly assaulted and raped this woman and, before leaving, stole her mobile phone. After the complaint, the Civil Guard launched an operation to find the whereabouts of the aggressors.
They did not have to go very far because the next day they were able to identify two of them in the same place where the events took place.
The agents were able to identify two of the attackers thanks to the description of the victim, which detailed how they were dressed. Also because they still had with them the mobile phone that was stolen the day before.
The head of the Court of First Instance and Instruction number 2 of Cieza, acting as a guard, ordered, at the request of the prosecutor, last Friday the entry into provisional prison of the two detainees. They are being investigated for the crime of sexual assault and robbery with violence and intimidation.
The defendants, in a first statement, denied the facts and stated that the relationship was consensual and even that there was a prior payment of money for sexual contact.
Social Services Support
The Councilor for Women of the Cieza City Council, Melba Miñano, regretted the events and stressed that the Civil Guard, together with the Local Police, maintain a device to locate the third of the young people who, presumably, would have participated in the events. She pointed out that the victim “is being treated and evaluated by specialists, receiving all the support of Social Services of the Cieza City Council.”
In addition, he indicated that, during the patron saint festivities, which have just begun, a total of 150 agents will ensure security in the city and so that situations like this do not occur. In this regard, a ‘Purple Point’ is already in operation to collect all the complaints of those women who have been victims of any type of sexual assault.
Sexual crimes in the municipality almost tripled in the first six months of the year
In the first half of the year, the Region experienced a slight decrease in sexual crimes, of 9.6%, which contrasts with the unstoppable rise in previous periods and the rebound registered in the rest of the country. Between January and June, 282 cases were reported, more than one on average each day, according to the latest crime report for the first six months of the year published by the Ministry of the Interior. However, by municipalities, the increase registered in Cieza stands out, going from three to eight cases (an increase of 166%).
It is in this municipality, where, precisely, there has been the last complaint of a gang rape of a woman that occurred on August 16, along the banks of the Segura River as it passes through the town. San Pedro is the second locality where the cases increased the most – from three to five – and La Unión occupies the third position in the increase in complaints, going from four to seven sexual crimes. The report reveals that the Security Forces and Corps investigated up to 29 sexual assaults with penetration, 6.5% less. The remaining 253 sexual crimes represented a decrease of 10% compared to the data published in the same period last year.
