It is common in periods of greater tension or anxiety, to resort to various strategies that allow us to calm, reassure and maintain balance.
Some strategies are used clearly, voluntarily and proactively by us, such as breathing exercises or physical exercise to release tension. But, on the other hand, there are strategies that we resort to almost unintentionally and without any apparent control on our part, strategies that sometimes bother us, such as what we commonly call tics.
+ Why schools need psychologists and social workers
Tics – as long as they are not associated with other medical conditions – reflect significant psychomotor agitation. Basically, they arise when within us there are high patterns of anguish, tension or stress that we are not able to, in real time, give meaning and manage.
The levels of discomfort are accumulating and everything that is not expressed by words or elaborated by thought, will end up coming out of us and expressing itself in some way. Thus, our body looks for a way to free itself and tics gradually begin to appear.
Thus, tics take on a function that reassures and calms us, for example, when we frequently toss our hair, blink our eyes, or wag our feet while sitting. We trivialize these ‘involuntary’ movements, attributing it to the force of habit.
But behind these movements, there is always something within us that needs to be heard, that needs to be felt and that needs to be expressed clearly.
When we manage to discover what we are ‘running away from’, what is causing us so much stress and anguish, the tics that appeared with the function of calming us tend to decrease because they are no longer necessary.
So, to gradually eliminate tics, start by looking at the various areas of your life and day to day life to see what it is that you are trying to hide from yourself, what is causing these “background noises” and what is not happening. allowing to think about it. Well, identifying will always be the first step, so that you can then express and manage the situation in an efficient and balanced way.
Only by listening to yourself can you create space to reduce psychomotor agitation and, consequently, tics.
