The General Assembly is the body where the 193 member states of the UN sit on an equal footing and has a solely representative function, since the real power is exercised by the Security Council, where five great powers – the United States, China, Russia , United Kingdom and France – have the right of veto.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres addressed the Assembly to express his gratitude to Shahid for his “capable management of this body during certainly unprecedented times.”
In the current period of sessions, the General Assembly has played a certain role on two occasions, when it voted resolutions condemning Russia for the war in Ukraine, in votes required by several Western countries due to the inaction of the Security Council.
Those two votes in the Assembly served at least to show the relative isolation of Russia in the international community.: In the first one on March 2, 141 countries voted against the Russian invasion of Ukraine, 5 rejected the text and 35 countries opted for abstention, and the second vote on March 25 produced almost identical results.
Körösi -recalled Guterres- has been Permanent Representative of his country to the UN, as well as an expert in environmental sustainability.
Guterres reminded the next president of the Assembly that “we are facing a world in danger: from the war in Ukraine, in all its dimensions, to the growing impact of the climate crisis; from the covid-19 pandemic to the urgent humanitarian needs against hunger and poverty: the coming months will put the multilateral system to the test”.
Körösi – Guterres recalled – has been the Permanent Representative of his country to the UN, as well as an expert in environmental sustainability, which gives him “a broad perspective” and “a commitment to multilateral action.”
