Among the four injured in the attack against a group of tourists that occurred on Friday in Afghanistan is a woman from Bilbao. María Celia Tamayo, 82, is the Spanish woman who has been admitted to a hospital in Kabul since then. She herself has contacted from the health center with one of her colleagues in the Association of Retired Persons and Pensioners of BBK, to whom she has written a WhatsApp at dawn, as reported by Radio Euskadi. «Thank you all very much for your encouragement. It has been a miracle. Now I hope to recover soon and take us home. Sooner. See you soon,” the message said.
María Celia, who is known to those around her as Araceli, was part of the group of tourists who on Friday was visiting the market in the city of Bamiyan, in central Afghanistan, and who was the target of the attack. At first it was believed that the six Spaniards participating in that trip were Catalans and even the Minister of Foreign Affairs himself, José Manuel Albares, said so on Saturday in statements to RAC1. However, among them was this woman from Bilbao, who suffered injuries in the attack carried out by at least one armed man who killed three Spaniards.

The woman, passionate about travel and unusual destinations, remains admitted to the center that the Italian organization Emergency owns in Kabul. She had to undergo surgery for the injuries caused by the shooting and, according to the information provided by the Spanish diplomats deployed to the Afghan capital, “she is progressing favorably from her injuries but her prognosis is reserved.” WhatsApp confirms that María Celia is conscious despite the severity.
