Ministry of Internal Affairs: The United States extradited Smirnov to Russia, accused of kidnapping and torturing his daughter
The United States extradited Alexei Smirnov to Russia, accused of kidnapping his own daughter and abusing her. The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia reports this on its website.
The man was taken to Moscow by employees of the Russian division of Interpol. Previously, he was put on the international wanted list.
According to investigators, in 2019, Smirnov fraudulently took his daughter, born in 2012, to the United States. According to TASS, after her parents’ divorce, the court ruled that the girl should live with her mother. The father lived with her in the city of Dania Beach in Florida, where he tortured the girl for six months, beating, insulting and humiliating the child.
In February 2020, the Investigative Committee (IC) opened a criminal case against Smirnov for torture. He continued to hide in the United States despite the fact that he was wanted.
Earlier, the department of the Investigative Committee for the Republic of Bashkortostan opened a criminal case against a man suspected of kidnapping a seven-year-old girl in Sterlitamak. Video footage from surveillance cameras shows how an unknown person grabbed a young girl by the hand and dragged her along. The victim's elder brother did not allow the child to be taken away – he pulled his sister by the hand, after which the man disappeared.
