The United Arab Emirates renewed its commitment to support efforts to find a political solution to the Syrian crisis that would restore the desired security and stability to the Syrians, stressing its rejection of all foreign interference, and expressing its concern about the situation in the “Al-Hol camp” and the dangers posed by mines and unexploded ordnance.
In a statement she delivered before the UN Security Council session on the political and humanitarian situation in Syria, Amira Al-Hafiti, Deputy Permanent Representative of the State to the United Nations, stressed the need for the Syrian crisis to remain at the forefront of the Council’s discussions on urgent issues, calling for the need for joint efforts to focus on supporting the track the political situation, bringing international views closer to this file, and calling for a comprehensive cease-fire in all parts of the country, in order to restore calm and create an appropriate environment that allows the Syrian parties to reach a political solution.
The statement affirmed support for the Special Envoy’s efforts to build confidence between the parties, expressing the hope that more steps will be taken in this direction and that the Constitutional Committee will resume its meetings, which remain an essential step in the political track.
In the context of the current escalation, the statement reiterated the UAE’s rejection of foreign interventions in Syria, in order to preserve its unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
He also stressed that the high frequency of attacks launched by the terrorist organization “ISIS” in separate areas confirms the continued threats it poses to the security and stability of Syria and the region as a whole, and the need to confront it and not hesitate to combat it.
The statement said: “Most of the Syrians suffer from the absence of the most basic necessities of living and basic services such as electricity, at a time when economic conditions continue to deteriorate. The dire conditions in al-Hol camp require urgent attention from the international community, especially with ISIS exploiting these conditions to spread its extremist ideas.”
The statement referred to the difficult conditions for women and girls in the “Al-Hol camp”, noting that United Nations reports stated that 75% of the murders that occurred in the camp this year were committed against women, with reports of sexual violence cases, which confirms the need to provide Protecting them and responding to their needs.
The statement highlighted the dangers posed by mines and unexploded ordnance to the Syrian people, noting that one person out of every two people in Syria is at risk of death or injury from unexploded ordnance, as well as their obstruction to humanitarian operations, which requires continuing work to get rid of them.
The statement commended the efforts of the concerned authorities, including the United Nations Mine Action Service, in educating local communities in Syria about their dangers.
And the statement added: “The issue of providing support for early recovery projects remains essential to improving the conditions of Syrians, and similarly with regard to ensuring the unhindered and impartial delivery of humanitarian aid to all those in need throughout Syria.”
The statement stressed the need to provide appropriate security conditions to enable the humanitarian convoy to pass to the Ras al-Ain area.
He welcomed the reopening of Aleppo airport as essential to facilitate flights for the United Nations humanitarian air service.
