The secretary general of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), the Nigerian Mohamed Barkindo, He passed away last night at the age of 63. The managing director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mele Kyari, reported this morning on his Twitter account.
“We have lost our esteemed Dr. Mohamed Sanusi Barkindo. He died around 11 p.m. yesterday, July 5, 2022.”Kyari wrote in her tweet.
“It is certainly a great loss for his immediate family, the NNPC, our country Nigeria, OPEC and the global energy community. Funeral arrangements will be announced shortly,” he concluded in his brief statement.

Barkindo first assumed the OPEC General Secretariat on August 1, 2016, elected by consensus by all members of the Vienna-based organization, who reappointed him for a second term three years later.
According to the organization’s statutes, a person can only remain for two three-year terms in the highest position of the organization, which today has thirteen member countries.
Since Barkindo’s second and last term was due to expire on the 31st of this monththe OPEC ministers have already appointed his replacement, the Kuwaiti Haitham al-Ghais.
