The Popular Party has registered a motion in the Regional Assembly to submit a request to the Government of Spain so that, in collaboration with the Cartagena City Council, it makes an investment plan in the batteries on the coasts of Cartagena in order to rehabilitate them and make them a historical and tourist attraction. The PP demands a minimum of maintenance and conservation for this military heritage.

The request takes place days after the Association of Friends of the Fortresses and Castles of Cartagena, Aforca, has given a new warning to the administrations for the deterioration of the well-known coastal battery of Castillitos, in Cabo Tiñoso. According to Aforca, said military site, one of the best known and popular for its unique architecture and large Vickers cannons, is once again suffering deterioration due to lack of maintenance and attention. It also occurs in the nearby military sites of Jorel and Atalayón.

Deputy María Casajús, defender of the initiative, has pointed out that “the state of the batteries, great treasures of our coasts, is deplorable, and it is time for the central government, owner of them, to take measures for their restoration.” She recalled that since the 18th century, coastal artillery batteries began to be built in Cartagena to protect the access to the naval base, which were successively modernized and expanded with more facilities in the 19th and 20th centuries. Now they are all out of use.

Casajús recalled “the great architectural value of batteries such as those of Cala Cortina, Aguilones y Conejos, La Chapa, which is part of the Calblanque Regional Park, Monte de las Cenizas and Peña del Águila, those of Cabo Tiñoso, or La Parajola, declared a of cultural interest on August 7, 1997.

Precisely, the deputy referred to the Castillitos battery, whose uniqueness and history meant that in August 1997 it was declared an asset of cultural interest. In 2013 it became a semi-finalist in the Repsol Guide's election of the best corner of Spain. “However, we can see how the floors of its towers are degrading, the poor state of the access road and a parking area full of holes,” she added.
