Francis accepts the resignation of Monsignor Michel Aupetit and in his place appoints Monsignor Georges Pontier
VATICAN CITY. His resignation made headlines in newspapers around the world. Now the Pope has accepted the resignation from the pastoral government of the metropolitan archdiocese of Paris presented by Monsignor Michel Aupetit and at the same time appointed Monsignor Georges Pontier Apostolic Administrator Sede vacante et “ad nutum” Sanctae Sedis (ie at the disposal of the Holy See) of the same archdiocese .
In the storm
Monsignor Aupetit ended up in the storm following a journalistic investigation by “Le Point” according to which the archbishop of Paris had a love story with a woman in 2012. The prelate denied the circumstance but admitted to having handled the situation badly. Beyond the rumors about the liason, the journalistic investigation of Le Point revealed the authoritarian style of the now former archbishop of Paris: “A man who focuses everything on himself, behaves like a doctor who is sure of himself and of his diagnosis . He spoke on the historic ‘Collège des Bernardins’, a Catholic center in dialogue with society and other religions, from which well-known personalities left due to incompatibility with Aupetit. He cut it short: “The Bernardins aren’t Catholic enough.” He then disturbed and made people discuss, the journalistic investigation revealed, his silence on the Sauvé report on sexual abuse: «A skimpy message to the attention of the faithful. No public intervention by one of the main figures of the Church of France ».
Amazement
“’Those who know me and share my daily life could surely assure me that I have not had a double life as suggested by the article. I admit that I have handled the situation badly with a person who has come forward many times “, underlined Monsignor Michel Aupetit, in a statement released to Radio Notre-Dame, the radio of the diocese of Paris, after having handed his resignation into the hands of the Pope following a journalistic investigation by “Le Point” which attributed to him a love story with a woman dating back to 2012. “In any case – observes the archbishop – I have entrusted this error to my spiritual guide the ecclesiastical authority she was informed today as every day. I place my life in the hands of the Lord as I did on the day of my ordination ». On the investigation that concerns him, Monsignor Aupetit says he was literally «shocked. I wondered if there were really so many people who wanted me to leave … ”. Shocked also by the “accusations of negligence” in government matters, even if, he says, “it is normal that the decisions to be made when one is responsible generate frustration and bitterness”. Aupetit assures that he has found ‘«refuge in prayer, without which I can do nothing and comfort in the support of so many people from Paris, including priests, friends, faithful. I thank those who have helped me to keep my head above the water in these last days ».
