Ophthalmologist Shilova: smokers develop cataracts and glaucoma at an earlier age
Chief Physician of the “Clinic of Dr. Shilova”, ophthalmologist, Doctor of Medical Sciences Tatyana Shilova in an interview with Ura.ru warnedthat a number of diseases develop in smokers in an accelerated manner. According to her, because of a bad habit, a person develops cataracts and glaucoma at an earlier age.
“There are many scientific papers that say that a smoker is prone to the appearance and development of cataracts at an earlier age. We usually talk about cataracts at the age closer to 70 years, but in smokers and at 50 years old we determine the first signs of cataracts. This is clouding in the lens, which begins to reduce vision and weakens the ability to change the focal length. The eye of a smoking person is 10-15-20 years older than the eyes of his peers, ”the specialist said.
In addition, glaucoma, a coronary disease of the eye, is aggravated in smokers, causing vasospasm, which makes it much more difficult for people who are prone to bad habits, the physician explained. Shilova added that, in addition, the disease is less treatable due to drug resistance, and repeated surgery is often required.
Earlier, a resident of the UK lost her eye because of a dangerous bacterium that got under a contact lens.
