Raquel Buenrostroholder of the Ministry of Economyasserted that the mining sector in Mexico is one of the industries with the most corruption related to the regulations of the agency he directs.
At a press conference, when asked why the federal government has not granted new mining concessions since 2019, the official responded that in addition to corruption, the mining sector practically does not pay taxes in proportion to its total income.
“We have criminal complaints, because people who worked in Economy granted concessions to themselves, spaces and mines, so there is a very strong problem of corruption and we are trying to integrate all the information, because it does not make sense to continue giving concessions,” said Buenrostro.
According to a report presented in June of this year by the ‘Cambiémosla Ya Collective’, the mining of metallic and non-metallic minerals contributes barely 0.97 percent of the total collection of the Federal government.
In addition, according to Leticia Merino Pérez, coordinator of the Academic Observatory of Society, Environment and Institutions of the UNAM, the taxes that the federal government demands for mining activity They are the lowest in Latin America.
