US President Joe Biden arrived in Italy yesterday to attend meetings with leaders of the Group of Seven industrialized countries, scheduled to be held today in the city of Bologna, southern Italy.
Leaders of the most advanced democratic countries will discuss several challenges during meetings from June 13 to 15, including wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, trade imbalances with China, the risks that artificial intelligence may entail, and development challenges in Africa.
White House spokesman John Kirby said that Biden will again hold a meeting with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, followed by a joint press conference.
The G7 leaders head to the summit already facing many problems in their countries, but at the same time seeking solutions to many of the world’s most pressing problems.
The official list of guests invited to attend the G7 summit included the names of many leaders, especially Pope Francis, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in addition to many Arab leaders.
The summit will discuss in particular the wars taking place in Ukraine and the Gaza Strip, and will be attended by guests who will not participate in its official discussions, but rather in meetings that will take place on its sidelines.
In the midst of escalating global tensions, the leaders of the seven countries, including US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, his Japanese counterpart Fumoi Kishida, Canadian Justin Trudeau and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, will meet in the luxurious coastal resort of Borgo Egnazia in Puglia, southern Italy, in addition to the summit’s hostess, President Italian Minister Giorgia Meloni.
Africa, climate change and development will be the topics of the opening session of the G7 on Thursday.
Friday’s summit agenda includes discussions on migration, the Indo-Pacific region and economic security, as well as artificial intelligence.
The Pope will attend the dedicated meeting on artificial intelligence, which he believes represents a decisive challenge for humanity.
