“I agree with the proposal to ban the use of cell phones by elementary and middle school students. From my over twenty years of experience on digital risks, already at 8-10 children live with their heads glued to a screen, social media begins to become a drug and there is an accumulation of information in the brain. The 'internet addiction disorder' explodes which leads them to be dependent and stressed. So if they don't use cell phones in class it can only be good for them, I would say to leave the use of the tablet only for teaching-related activities”. Enzo Di Frenna, founder of Netdipendenza Onlus, explains this to Adnkronos Salute, speaking on the proposal of the Minister of Education Giuseppe Valditara to ban cell phones in primary and middle schools.
At school “the mobile phone should be placed in a locker” recalls Di Frenna and “otherwise the kids are constantly distracted and lose concentration”, the expert remarks. “Today there is an information and brain overload even in the little ones, while – he suggests – we should aim to teach them, starting from their families, to manage the instrument in an intelligent way”.
Young people who are 'slaves' to the internet risk becoming slaves even as adults. “Video addiction is a disease and Netdipendenza Onlus – explains Di Frenna – wants to help people to 'switch off'. It's like when you eat badly and obesity and diseases such as diabetes arise, the same thing happens with information, perhaps of poor quality, which causes the brain to become 'obese'. Those who are techno-stressed have headaches, suffer from insomnia, have anxiety attacks and depression can even occur.” Since 2007 Netdipendenza Onlus has been promoting excursions in contact with nature to prevent video addiction and technostress, and all health risks.
