Borrell: EU will respond with new sanctions on Russia’s deployment of nuclear weapons in Belarus
The European Union (EU) is ready to respond with new sanctions to Russia’s deployment of tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus. Josep Borrell, head of the EU foreign policy service, wrote about this on his page in Twitter.
According to him, the deployment of Russian nuclear weapons in Belarus will be “an escalation and a threat to European security.” At the same time, the diplomat stressed that Minsk “still can stop it.”
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia and Belarus had agreed to deploy tactical nuclear weapons in the republic, the construction of a storage facility for which would be completed by early summer. The head of state noted that the deployment of ammunition would not violate obligations under the Treaty on Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms.
