The Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, directed the urgent formation of a coordination mechanism with Sudan to implement the Arab Food Security Initiative, to be coordinated by the League, the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development, based in Khartoum, with the participation of the relevant bodies, in preparation for presenting the results of its work to the summit Next Arabic in Algeria.
This came during Aboul Gheit’s meeting yesterday at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the League in Cairo with Dr. Gabriel Ibrahim, Minister of Finance and Economic Planning in Sudan, who headed his country’s delegation to the meeting of the special session of the Economic and Social Council of the League of Arab States, in the presence of the Sudanese Minister of Agriculture in charge, Dr. Abu Bakr Omar Al-Bushri. He also participated in The meeting, Dr. Ibrahim Al-Dukhairi, Director General of the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development.
Jamal Rushdie, the official spokesman for the Secretary-General of the Arab League, said that Aboul Gheit listened to Minister Jibril Ibrahim’s presentation on the situation in Sudan and its developments, noting that Aboul Gheit renewed the League’s full commitment to supporting efforts to make the transitional period successful and achieve national reconciliation in Sudan, in order to enhance peace and stability in the country, expressing at the same time his confidence in the ability and wisdom of the Sudanese leaders to address the concerns and challenges facing the country.
Rushdie added that the meeting also dealt with an integrated presentation by the two Sudanese ministers on the critical food security situation faced by many countries in the Arab region in light of the high food prices, due to the current international political situation, drought and climate change disasters.
The two ministers expressed Sudan’s full readiness to submit adequate studies to complete the implementation of the Arab Food Security Initiative, which was previously launched by Sudan in 2013 and approved by the Arab Development Summit at the time.
