In Barcelona the Red Bull the tests had begun with the reigning world champion Max Verstappen in the car, busy at the wheel for the whole inaugural day of Wednesday 23 February. The Dutch driver had covered kilometers without looking too much at the clock. On the following day Sergio Perez had to deal with a gearbox problem that significantly reduced the time available to Checo to drive the RB18. On Friday morning, in the last session available, Verstappen seemed to be on a program of progressive runs with increasingly high-performance compounds, but the numerous red flags prevented the 1997 class from launching with C4 and C5 soft tires. In the afternoon, Perez was able to get back behind the wheel without mechanical problems, tackling the session that began in the wet to test the intermediate and wet tires prepared by Pirelli.
In Bahrain, Red Bull will repeat the same scheme with a full day each for the drivers who will then share the RB18 on Saturday on the final day. To open the tests, this time, it will be Sergio Perez. On Friday, however, the car will be available to Verstappen. On Saturday the two bearers of the team led by Christian Horner will take turns driving with shifts yet to be established. Red Bull is waiting for important news that will have to complete the concept introduced by Adrian Newey with the RB18 in the pre-testing in Barcelona. Sergio Perez will be the one to ‘baptize’ them and verify that everything works for the next day.
