The proof of Tesla Model Y, the best-selling electric car in the world. We are on board the Tesla Model Y Long Range Dual Motor (large battery and all-wheel drive with dual motor), renewed from 2022, for a new test. This Model Y that we are testing is equipped with 2 engines with a total power of around 370 horsepower and all-wheel drive. The test was carried out on a mixed route, motorway, provincial road and winding mountain road with ups and downs where we had the opportunity to try it in different situations.
After having completed the 160 km tour (departure from Rome to reach Lake Turano via the Via Salaria and then return to Rome via Carsoli and the A24 Roma l’Aquila) we can already make the first considerations. The Model Y Dual Motor Long Range is very lively and responsive to drive so, I confess, I was unable to go into “NORMAL” mode. This Y led me to drive it in a sporty way with breathtaking acceleration (remember zero-100 in 5 seconds) and overtaking with great ease, even in a small space. Between the bends it offers excellent handling and great precision, also thanks to the tyres Michelin Pilot Sport EV which have always ensured maximum grip in every situation. The braking is very powerful where great use is usually made of regenerative braking.
You travel in total silence! Maximum comfort on board, charging speed, reduced costs, practically halved, in Tesla superchargers, it is a very practical car for daily use, spacious for the family and also beautiful to look at! also with a sporting streak.
The cost for a 75 kWh battery charge depends on where you charge. The maximum saving is achieved by refueling it at a private user where you spend less than 20 euros, €18.75 (at a cost of 0.2 of the kWh), while at Tesla Superchargers the cost reaches 37 euro (€0.50/kWh), always cheaper than other Fast charging stations where the kWh even exceeds €0.90/kWh with a charging cost that exceeds €65.
Dimensions, weight, performance and autonomy
It is 4.78 long, 1.92 wide, 1.62 high with a wheelbase of 2.89 and an empty weight of 2,054 kg. All-wheel drive, it is equipped with two motors for a total power of 372 horsepower with a torque of 500 Nm. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5 seconds and reaches a maximum speed of 217 km/h (indicated 221). The battery is 78.1 kWh of which 75.0 kWh can be used for a range ranging from 350 km to over 600 km, depending on the driving style, route and temperatures.
Model Y passenger compartment interior
The interior of the Model Y features an elegant and minimalist design. The passenger compartment is really very spacious for both front and rear passengers. 5 seats, with heated and electrically adjustable ice white seats. The seats are white “vegan” leather, made from high-quality synthetic materials that feels like natural leather, soft to the touch and also seems durable.
The well-enveloping and comfortable front seats are electrically adjustable, heated and also have ventilation. The rear seats are spacious and comfortable even for the tallest, and can be reclined and folded to increase the rear load space which reaches up to 2,158 litres. There is a panoramic glass roof which allows viewing upwards and guarantees strong brightness in the passenger compartment. It is made with soundproof glass that attenuates noise and ensures a quiet ride, protecting occupants from direct sun, heat and UV rays.
In the center of the console there is the horizontal 15-inch LED screen through which you can control all the functions of the Model Y, navigation, seat configuration, driving style, radio and much more. For free time, when traveling or during charging stops, there is no shortage of entertainment from browsing the internet to reaching sites, watching videos with YouTube or a film with Netflix integrated among the apps. The physical controls have almost been eliminated, only two joysticks remain on the steering wheel, the window buttons and the one for electrically opening the doors as well as a mechanical safety lever.
The hi-fi system is very powerful and sounds great, clear and with intense bass thanks to 13 speakers distributed throughout the passenger compartment as well as a nice sub. There is a 12 Volt socket under the armrest and USB Type C sockets, a very large storage compartment on the central console as well as the classic drawer in front of the passenger. The lever on the left on the steering wheel is used to activate the indicators and the blind spot camera visible from the central screen. The right lever controls the gear, switching between parking, rear, neutral and drive. It is possible to select the acceleration mode from SOFT to STANDARD. On the motorway you can activate the Traffic Aware Cruise Control, or the advanced Autopilot capable of automatically changing lanes. It has a boot of 854 liters which reaches up to 2,158 liters when the rear seats are folded down.
Charging with Plug & Charge
It is possible to recharge the MODEL Y at home, at public charging stations or at the Tesla Supercharger. There are 12,000 in Europe and many in Italy where they charge at a rate of up to 250 kW in the range between 20% and 80% when the charging speed is higher, nominal. At Superchargers with the CCS socket, charging in direct current reaches up to 250 kW peak, with an average charging rate of 120 kW from 10% to 80% and less than half an hour, about 27 minutes, thus recovering from 300 to 400 km of autonomy. Just reach the TESLA charging station and connect the car to the station via the cable and the charging starts. The system recognizes the car and then charges the cost of charging to the owner’s credit card. All this thanks to the new PnC function included in the ISO 15118 standard.
In alternating current using the Type 2 connector it can charge with a power of up to 11 kW and a time required to go from 0 to 100% of approximately 8 hours.
The price of this Model Y Long Range Dual Motor with 20″ wheels and white seats is 56,375 euros.
