Territorial disputes|The Chinese Coast Guard has described the passage of the Filipino ship to the area as illegal.
Philippine Islands says a member of the country’s navy was seriously injured in a collision with China’s coast guard. The collision took place on Monday in the South China Sea, whose maritime territories are disputed by several countries.
The injured navy member has been safely evacuated from the ship and received treatment, according to the Philippine military.
A Philippine military statement claims the Chinese coast guard rammed the Philippine ship on purpose.
China Coast Guard has described illegal passage of the Philippine ship into the area and claimed that the ship had ignored several warnings from the Chinese side. The Philippines on Monday called China’s claims fraudulent and misleading.
On Saturday, a new regulation came into force in China, according to which the country’s coast guard can arrest foreigners who are deemed to have illegally entered disputed maritime territory.
In its statement, the Chinese Coast Guard says that it acted in accordance with the new regulation. In the Philippines, the president Ferdinand Marcos has called the regulation a worrying escalation.
China has sought to manage the South China Sea, although according to international law, the country has no grounds for doing so.
