The Taiwanese authorities excluded Russia from a special visa-free program introduced in 2018 on an experimental basis. About this on Friday, September 16, reported the island’s central news agency (CNA), citing the Foreign Office.
It is noted that the visa-free regime for Russian citizens expired on July 31 and was not extended. However, since March 2020, it has not been applicable in practice due to entry restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic.
However, citizens of the United States, Australia and EU countries do not need visas to visit Taiwan from March 12, subject to a three-day quarantine.
Earlier, on September 12, Russian President Vladimir Putin called the actions of unfriendly countries against Russia impulsive, unprofessional and unpredictable.
Before that, on March 7, the Russian government approved a list of unfriendly countries and territories. The list also includes the island of Taiwan.
The Taiwanese administration opened visa-free entry for Russians back in 2018. It was noted that citizens of the Russian Federation can come to the island and stay there for up to 14 days without a visa.
Taiwan is part of China but not under Beijing’s control. Official relations between the PRC government and its island province broke off in 1949, contacts resumed in the late 1980s.
