President of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco, said he will present Lula with a plan to renegotiate the states’ debts
The Minister of Institutional Relations, Alexandre Padilha, said this Friday (June 14, 2024) that the government’s strategy has always been to leave it to the Senate to propose a plan for renegotiating the States’ debts.
“From the beginning, our strategy, even respecting the leading role of President Rodrigo Pacheco, was that the project was initiated by the Senate, the house of the Federation”he stated.
On Thursday (June 13), the President of the House, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), stated that he will present to the president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) a plan for renegotiating State debts, as soon as the Chief Executive returns from his trip.
“I believe that next week will be suitable for the definitive presentation of a project to begin a legislative process”the senator told journalists.
According to Pacheco, the state debt renegotiation program will take place via a complementary bill. The proposal will include:
- reduction of the debt index (today IPCA [Índice Nacional de Preços ao Consumidor Amplo] + 4%, limited to Selic, the basic interest rate);
- federalization of share capital of state companies;
- granting credits.
The senator declared that the plan will bring alternatives to mitigate the deficit of some States with the Union “without sacrificing public servants and without handing over state assets”.
Padilha denied that there is a lack of harmony between Congress and mentioned that the final text to be debated will be agreed with the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad.
