Government formalized the strike request; Even with a possible suspension, international tournaments would continue to be played
The president of the CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation), Ednaldo Rodrigues, said this Friday (May 10, 2024) that the suspension of the Brazilian Championship is a decision made by the clubs. The Ministry of Sports formalized a request for the tournament to be suspended due to the rains in Rio Grande do Sul.
The request, signed by minister André Fufuca, cites, in addition to the damage caused to the stadiums and training centers of teams from Rio Grande do Sul, the seriousness of the situation and “all the people, families and loved ones who donate at this time to the survival and reconstruction of homes and everything else affected”. Here’s the complete (PDF- 110kB).
According to the State Civil Defense, 116 people died because of the rains. More than 1.9 million have been affected and 337,000 are homeless. The State is expected to face a weekend with new rains with warnings of “Danger” It is “Potential danger”, according to Inmet (National Institute of Meteorology).
The CBF had already suspended games by Rio Grande do Sul clubs in the championship for 20 days, accepting a request from Grêmio, Internacional and Juventude on May 7. The postponed matches are those of series A, C and D for men and women’s football. The directors of Flamengo, Palmeiras and São Paulo showed solidarity and made their facilities available to the teams from Rio Grande do Sul.
Regarding the extension of the strike, Ednaldo said he respected the government’s request, but that the decision must be consulted with the clubs and that “The power of the CBF is not a supreme and absolute power. It’s a limited power”. The CBF has been the target of criticism from fans for not suspending the championship.
“When defining a competition, the CBF holds Technical Council meetings for Series A, B, C, D and base competitions. If a strike is requested, we will inform each club, each series of these clubs, so that they can take a position in relation to the document from the Ministry of Sports. And from there, if necessary, bring together the Technical Council so that they can deliberate. ‘Look, can we stop all the competition?’”, said Rodrigues.
Despite an eventual consensus on the Brazilian championship, Ednaldo Rodrigues said that international competitions would continue, citing Conmebol Libertadores and the Copa Sudamericana. “Everything that happens from now on we will have to talk to the clubs and all football divisions”.
