Threads would only need a quarter of the monthly users of Instagram, also owned by Meta, to be as big as Twitter, the analyst estimates.
Facebook the owner Meta’s new text message service was released in the Apple and Android app stores early Thursday Finnish time.
The launch of the platform in Europe has been delayed due to regulationand the application cannot be installed from application stores in Finland.
However, the application also works in Finland, at least on Android, if it is installed in alternative ways.
When it opened, there were already accounts open on the platform, among other things With Shakira and With Jack Black and various media outlets such as the Hollywood Reporter and Vice.
Facebook’s founder Mark Zuckerberg’s said over two million users joined Threads in the first two hours and over five million in the first four hours.
“There should be a public discussion platform with over a billion users. It’s going to take time, but I think we can do it,” Zuckerberg wrote on Threads early Thursday to his more than 200,000 followers.
Application was introduced as a clear spin-off of Instagram, giving the platform a theoretically ready-made audience of over two billion users.
“If an Instagram user with a lot of followers — starts posting regularly on Threads, the new platform can become successful quickly,” estimates the financial analyst Brian Wieser.
Analyst at the market research company Insider Intelligence by Jasmine Engberg according to Threads, it would only need a quarter of Instagram’s monthly users to be as big as Twitter.
“Twitter users are desperate for an alternative and Musk has offered (Mark) to Zuckerberg the window,” said Engberg.
Zuckerberg and Musk have recently offered to sort out their differences even in the fighting ring.
The idea of a cage fight made headlines after Zuckerberg allegedly told his employees that Threads would be like Twitter, but “sensibly managed.”
Meta has given indications that the company wants to take a crack at Twitter and its toxic reputation.
The director of Instagram, also owned by Meta Adam Mosser has told users of the image service that Threads is meant to be an open and friendly discussion platform.
During Musk’s time at the helm of Twitter, moderation of the content published on the platform has been reduced to a minimum, and in addition, disruptions and hasty decisions have not only tarnished the site’s reputation, but also caused public figures and large advertisers to leave the platform.
Musk announced last week that he would limit how many tweets users of the messaging service can see during the day. According to the billionaire, it would be a temporary measure, but no more detailed information has been given about its possible duration.
After this, Musk angered even the most dedicated Twitter enthusiasts by declaring that access to Tweetdeck, intended for organizing a flood of tweets, will only be offered to paying customers in the future.
Although attention has recently focused on Musk and Twitter, Zuckerberg and Meta have not escaped criticism either. The company’s operations have been treated with reservations, especially in Europe.
Meta is especially criticized for the way it handles the personal data of its users. Meta utilizes users’ personal data for targeted advertising, which enables the company to make a billion-dollar profit quarter after quarter.
According to a source familiar with the matter, regulatory concerns are delaying the launch of Threads in the EU.
Meta is subject to the new Digital Market Act (DMA) in the EU, which, when it enters into force, sets stricter requirements for the processing of personal data in the services of digital giants.
Among other things, the DMA would limit how companies can transfer personal data between their different products. This might make it difficult to use Instagram’s popularity for Threads, for example.
Meta was caught in this kind of activity after the company bought the Whatsapp messaging app.
