The assailant was identified by Slovak media as a 71-year-old poet, Juraj Cintula.

Citing intelligence reports, Matus Sutaj Estok stressed that someone had deleted the shooter’s history and communications on Facebook while he was detained.
But the Slovak media regulation agency specified that Meta, owner of Facebook, informed authorities that it had deleted the suspect’s account.

“We talked about the manipulation of the account shortly after the arrest, that is, between the attack and the intervention of the Meta company,” he declared.
The assassination attempt highlighted the serious political divisions in the country, where Fico, 59, took office in October following the victory of his Smer party in the legislative elections.
The leader is currently serving his fourth term as prime minister.
Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok said on Saturday that If one of the shots “had reached a few centimeters higher, it would have hit the prime minister’s liver.”
Sutaj Estok added Sunday that police are studying the option that the attacker was not alone.
“One version is that the culprit was part of a group of people who encouraged each other to commit the crime,” he declared, specifying that the gunman could have revealed his intentions to someone.

Fico, who headed the government between 2006-2010 and 2012-2018, has returned to the post of prime minister since his centrist populist party, Smer-SD, won the general election last year.
He achieved this new mandate after campaigning on peace proposals between Russia and Ukraine, Slovakia’s neighbor, and after promising to stop sending military aid to kyiv, which he did after being elected.
The assassination attempt caused great shock in the country of 5.4 million inhabitants, a member of the EU and NATO.which has been experiencing a strong political division for years.
