The Russian intelligence chief accuses NATO of practicing a nuclear attack on Russia. Moscow’s military is meanwhile practicing the use of tactical nuclear weapons.
Moscow – After the Russian Defense Ministry announced nuclear exercises, Russia is now turning the tables. Vladimir Kulischow, an official of the Russian secret service, accuses the NATOpreparations would be made for a nuclear attack on the eastern flank.
Speaking to the Russian news agency RIA Novosti The general explained: “NATO intelligence activities near the Russian border are increasing” and “the intensity of the operational and combat training of the Allied troops” is being increased. In view of the tense situation in the Ukraine War and the Kremlin’s regular threats to the West, this may not seem surprising. For Kulishov, however, the West’s response to Russia’s provocations is becoming propaganda.
Russia’s nuclear exercises as a response to Western provocation – Ukraine war as a propaganda tool
The intelligence official continues: “Scenarios are being worked out for carrying out aggression against the Russian Federation, including nuclear attacks on our territory.” In early May, the Russian Defense Ministry announced that it would test the use of tactical nuclear weapons due to “provocative statements and threats from France, Great Britain and the United States against the Russian Federation,” as the Kremlin justified the decision. Although Wladimir Putin is testing the use of nuclear weapons, Moscow is now accusing NATO of the same thing.
Moscow has long been trying to use the Ukraine war as a propaganda tool against the West. The Kremlin repeatedly describes the war in the Ukraine as a proxy fight between NATO and Russia and cites the military aid of NATO states to Kiev, as well as the NATO accession of Sweden and Finland.
Moscow’s provocations to NATO – NATO chief Stoltenberg calls for de-escalation
Moscow seems to want to provoke NATO further with its jibes against the West. In addition to the nuclear exercise, the Kremlin recently published a document in which the Russian border in the Baltic Sea was to be re-examined. Another provocation against the NATO states Finland and Lithuania, as Newsweek last reported. The document was withdrawn after a wave of outrage. And Putin denied any ambitions to expand Russian territorial waters in the Baltic Sea.
However, the debate about NATO ground troops in Ukraine also seems to be repeatedly fuelled by Russian provocations. Poland’s foreign minister said on Tuesday (28 May) that he did not want to rule out the use of ground troops in the Ukraine war. Meanwhile, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg tried to calm the waters and urged de-escalation: “The other task (NATO, editor’s note) is to prevent this war from escalating beyond Ukraine and becoming a real conflict between NATO and Russia.” (sure)
