The arrival of Volodymr Zelensky in Switzerland officially opens the two-day global summit on Ukraine, strongly desired by the Kiev leader to involve the bulk of the international community in a solution to the crisis based on his Ten-Point Peace Formula. An ambitious document that calls for a substantial restoration of the pre-war status quo, with the withdrawal of Russian troops and the return of Crimea.
The proposal was rejected by Russia which will not participate in the summit, limiting the summit’s chances of actually having an impact on the war. Despite Zelensky’s resistance to a Moscow presence, the Swiss insist that Russia must be involved sooner or later. «Without the participation of Russia, without an honest and responsible dialogue with us, it is impossible to reach a peaceful solution in Ukraine and in general on global and European security», observed Vladimir Putin, according to whom the conference is «just another ploy to divert everyone’s attention.”
But a clear message arrives from the G7 to Putin. “We reaffirm our firm support for Ukraine for as long as necessary,” the leaders write in the final statement, underlining that Moscow must “end its illegal war of aggression” and also “pay for the damage it has caused to Ukraine.” which «according to the World Bank now exceed 486 billion dollars». According to the “Big Seven”, the decision to make around 50 billion dollars available “by exploiting the extraordinary revenues deriving from the immobilized Russian sovereign assets” is an “unequivocal” signal to Russia.
