Niinistö believes in the membership of Finland and Sweden by the summer’s NATO summit.
Ukrainian and there is no president in the Russian war Sauli Niinistön including right now any conditions for peace. According to Niinistö, the only and desirable outcome of the war is that Ukraine gets the just peace it has accepted.
In an interview with STT, Niinistö warns that a mere peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia is not enough to convincingly remove the deep rift that has formed between the parties. This would be the case regardless of where the Russian-Ukrainian border ends up being, says Niinistö. According to him, significant world powers would be needed as guarantors for lasting peace.
According to Niinistö, the more widely threatening division of the world into two parts between democratic and autocratic countries depends a lot on how relations between the United States and China develop.
Niinistö believes that Finland and Sweden will be NATO members by the time of the NATO summit in Vilnius in July. If this does not happen, it would create big question marks, according to the president, as to why even after that. Delaying it longer would start to feel like a long-shot, Niinistö estimates.
He estimates that the delay in the accession of new members is already a problem for NATO and that many member countries are surprised by the course of the process.
Niinistö commented on the possible difference in the timing of Finland and Sweden’s accession by stating that Finland must proceed in a “mutual understanding” with Sweden and that the goal is membership for both countries as soon as possible.
