Sebastião Melo stated that purchasing supplies is difficult due to difficult access to the city caused by the flood
The mayor of Porto Alegre, Sebastian Melo (MDB-RS), said that the capital of Rio Grande do Sul only has a stock of oxygen in its hospitals until Sunday (May 5, 2024). In an interview with CNN this Saturday (May 4), the emedebista stated that the purchase of supply tanks is complicated due to the scenario of little access to the city due to the obstructions caused by the flood.
“We are facing significant challenges in acquiring more oxygen due to access difficulties caused by the flood“, he said. “I have to have oxygen from Monday onwards, otherwise there will be a shortage, because the capital also serves patients from all over Rio Grande do Sul”.
The mayor expressed concern about the prospect of an increase in Guaíba, the capital’s main water body. He said the river is still rising and it is possible that it will reach 5.50 m. This Saturday (May 4) it reached 5.19 m, the highest level in history.
The storms in Rio Grande do Sul started on Sunday (28 March). A Civil Defense of Rio Grande do Sul reported at 6pm this Saturday (May 4, 2024) that the State recorded 55 confirmed deaths and 7 under investigation due to the rains. Another 74 people remain missing. There are still 13,324 people in shelters and 69,242 homeless. In total, more than 510,000 people were affected.
