The condemnation has been categorical and has come immediately from the front lines of politics, sports and the judiciary. The pitched battle between groups of fans from Querétaro and Atlas during the game that was played this Saturday at the La Corregidora stadium has provoked almost immediate reactions from the governors of Querétaro and Jalisco. The first, Manuel Kuri, has assured that there will be no impunity. “I have given instructions to apply the law with all its consequences.” After holding a meeting with those responsible for security and the territory’s government, he reiterated that “there will be punishment” for those who unleashed an unbridled fury that has left dozens injured and chilling images of violence.
Kuri is in contact with his counterpart, Enrique Alfaro, who has stated “that all the security and emergency areas of Jalisco are in communication with the Querétaro authorities to provide support in whatever is required.” “The information and data on these events have not yet been determined, but I will be on the lookout to support whatever is needed. The Government of Jalisco deeply regrets that violence is taking over soccer stadiums,” added Alfaro.
The president of the League, Mikel Arriola, has made himself available to the authorities to collaborate in the investigation and has announced the suspension of all the remaining matches of the ninth day scheduled for this Sunday. “Inadmissible and unfortunate violence”, he has made it clear. “Those responsible for the lack of security in the stadium will be punished in an exemplary manner. The safety of our players and fans is a priority”. At the moment the details of the investigations are not known, but the head of the Mexican judiciary, Arturo Zaldívar, has already been interested in them.
“I deeply regret what happened in my city of Querétaro. My condolences and hugs to the families of the victims. Those responsible must be investigated and punished. Mexico cannot continue like this. It is urgent to stop the violence. A family event cannot end like this”, has condemned the Minister President of the Supreme Court of Justice of the Nation (SCJN).
In the absence of an official pronouncement from the federal government, one of the first convictions that has come from the official ranks has been that of Ricardo Monreal, one of the most relevant figures of the Fourth Transformation, the head of senators of Morena and aspiring to replace the President Andrés Manuel López Obrador in 2024. The veteran politician has described as “tragic, painful and unfortunate the scenario experienced in the La Corregidora stadium” “So much barbarism and violence is inadmissible, and a dark day for national sport,” he lamented.
Also Santiago Nieto, until last November responsible for the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF), has also joined the clamor for repudiation. “I am very sorry for the terrible and tragic event at the La Corregidora stadium in Querétaro. I am from San Juan del Rio. Soccer is a sport that unites families. Safety is everyone’s responsibility. People’s lives must come before business”, he has indicated.
Various voices from the world of Mexican soccer have also joined the condemnation. Former soccer player and coach Rafael Márquez has tried to be clear in the face of scenes of violence that are unprecedented in the recent history of sports in the country. “Unfortunate what is happening in Querétaro, shame that this is happening in my country”, he has deplored him from his social networks. The National University Club has cried out against what happened. “What was experienced today in the stands is an act of violence that should not be repeated in any square and under any circumstances,” the team said in a statement, asking that efforts be redoubled by authorities, leagues and societies “to guarantee the integrity and security of the attendees”. Amaury Vergara, president of Chivas, has added three adjectives to the day: “Reprehensible, sad and inadmissible.” “What happened today in La Corregidora is not football. We will do everything on our part to promote peace and we join in the sorrow of the affected families”, he has promised.
