The President of Peru, Pedro Castillodecreed this Wednesday temporarily dissolve Congress and establish a national emergency government, hours before Parliament debated a vacancy motion (removal) against him that could have removed him from the head of state.
“To convene in the shortest term elections for a new Congress with constituent powers to prepare a new Constitution within a period not exceeding nine months. As of the date and until the new Congress is established, it will be governed by decree law”, Castillo said this Wednesday in a message to the Peruvian Nation.
Castillo added: “In response to the citizen claim throughout the country, we made the decision to establish a emergency government aimed at establishing the rule of law and democracy, for which purpose the following measures are issued: temporarily dissolve the Congress of the Republic and establish an exceptional emergency government”.
Castillo also decreed the nationwide curfew starting today, Wednesday, December 7, from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. tomorrow. He also declared a reorganization of the justice system: the Judiciary, the Public Ministry, the National Board of Justice, the Constitutional Court.
He also said that all those who possess illegal weapons must hand them over to the National Police within 72 hours. “Whoever does not do so commits a crime punishable by imprisonment that will be established in the decree law,” he exclaimed.
“The PNP with the help of the Armed Forces will dedicate all their efforts to the effective fight against crime, corruption and drug trafficking. The effect of which will be provided with the necessary resources,” said the Peruvian president.
