Is Orlando Bloom able to remember the text of the films he has starred in? This is the question that was asked Magazine Variety during his interview with the British actor, 47 years old. The result was published this Thursday, May 9, in a video that shows that there are roles that have marked the performer more than others. The film of the first sentence that they make him recite is clear, it is Pirates of the Caribbean. In the second it skids. “It is the kingdom of heaven?”, he asks his interviewer. Incorrect. “To the best of The Lord of the rings“, he tries again, but fails again and a third time, until they tell him the answer. “My mother, Troy…”, he accepts with a face of circumstances. “Wow… I think I erased that movie from my head,” Bloom justified.
The 2004 film, directed by Wolfgang Petersen and starring Brad Pitt, Sean Bean, Diane Kruger, Eric Bana and Orlando Bloom – although he prefers not to remember – is based on the Iliad by Homer and tells of the confrontation between Greeks and Trojans during the Trojan War. Bloom plays Paris, the little brother of Prince Hector (Eric Bana) and lover of Queen Helena (Diane Kurger), a romance that triggers the conflict. “A lot of people love that movie, but for me playing that character was like [hace un gesto de degollarse a sí mismo]. Am I allowed to say all these things? I didn’t want to make the movie. “I didn’t want to play this character,” he confesses 20 years after its premiere to Variety.
The film was nominated for an Oscar in 2005, but in the category of best costumes, an award that it won The Aviator. Even so, after disowning the film, Bloom defends it, although half-heartedly: “The movie was great. It was Brad. “It was Eric and Peter O’Toole,” he begins. “But how am I going to play this character?” [Paris]? It was completely against everything I felt in my being. At one point, the script has Paris crawling on the floor after being hit by someone and holding his brother’s leg. I thought, ‘I’m not going to be able to do this.’ One of my agents at the time said, ‘But that’s the moment that will make the difference!’ And I completely stung. “I think that’s why I erased that from my mind,” he adds wryly.
Diane Kruger, his beloved Helen of Troy in the film, also made headlines last October for saying that participating in it “was exciting”, but also “a circus”. According to the 47-year-old German actress, the sets were huge and the paparazzi flew over them in helicopters trying to capture images of Brad Pitt. In 2004, Pitt also filmed Mr and Mrs smith with Angelina Jolie, who would later become his wife, and even then rumors of an alleged relationship between them began to spread. But the press didn’t just focus on Pitt. “It was crazy! When the film came out, the press in Germany was very, very hard on me. They found my father, who I haven’t seen since I was 13. They made up stories. It was very hard,” Kruger explained last year. During the film’s premiere in Cannes, she said that she felt “very insecure and very sad.” “I was thinking, ‘Is this how it’s going to be forever?’ I can not deal with it’. Brad could tell she was upset. He came to my room and said, ‘I’ve heard some things and I want you to know that you’re one of us now. Don’t let them get to you.’ She was incredibly kind. “He really changed a lot of things for me,” she acknowledged.
Troy came at a crucial time in Bloom’s career, as he was coming off the successful trilogy of The Lord of the rings, where he played the elf Legolas, and had also released the first box office hit in the saga of Pirates of the Caribbean, where he played the blacksmith Will Turner. After those titles, Bloom has not starred in another Hollywood blockbuster. This 2024 he has given voice to an animated Peppa Pig film in which his wife, the singer Katy Perry, has also participated, and has starred in the thriller Red Right Hand.
