Musician Marko “Maki” Kolehmainen The bandmates remember Kolehmai with sadness. Kolehmainen died of a serious illness on Monday morning.
Male vocalist of the band Aikakone Alex Ojasti says that the news of the passing of a long-time friend and colleague was “quite a shock” and now the emotions are dominated by “shocking longing”.
Ojasti describes how Kolehmainen was a part of Aikakone to him like a family member and a soulmate.
“We cried and laughed together,” Ojasti tells HS.
“We understood each other. And when it was a bit more difficult day, we knew how to give support even in anticipation. We even experienced a certain kind of telepathic power.”
Ditch and Kolehmai was united by love for music.
The future bandmates met in the early 1990s, when each had their own band, but shared a drummer.
“A mutual strong bond was formed quickly.”
Ojasti says that Kolehmainen had ideas for a new band, which the men then decided together to take forward. The Time Machine was born. Kolehmainen played guitar in Aikakone and composed songs for the band.
In a time machine singing Sani Aartela describes his sadness as immense in the article he published on Facebook.
He characterizes Kolehmai as the king of Finnish pop, who deserved more recognition.
“He made history right from the start, after introducing machine music to this country with chest ratting,” he writes in his publication.
According to Aartela, Kolehmainen’s personality was marked by a wonderful sense of humor, which remained until the musician’s last moments.
In the text message she sent to HS, Aartela describes Kolehmainen as having made little noise about herself despite her merits and “was always on the side of the good and the weak and fought against the machines, in the music business”.
According to Aartela, Kolehmainen hoped that Aikakone’s flag must be held high.
“This will be implemented with Alex and the work will continue, but the sadness and longing is great.”
According to Aikakone’s concert calendar, the band has several concerts around Finland during the summer.
Vocalist Ein got to know Kolehmainen when he started his career in his early twenties. Kolehmainen played guitar in Ein’s backing band for a year at the end of the 1980s.
Kolehmainen’s talent caught Ein’s eye already in those days. The band learned Ein’s songs extremely carefully and played them as if the music had come from a record, he describes.
“Maki lived and breathed through music,” says Eini.
There was a lot of laughing on gig trips. Eini remembers the way the background band used to lay out a map of Finland before picking up the switch and heading to the concert venues.
“It was always amazing for Maki and the band to see where the next gig was.”
The road took you far to the other side of Ring III, i.e. far from home in Helsinki.
The friendship between Kolehmainen and Ein remained. The singer remembers the great warmth with which the famous pop composer met her even years later.
“He always hugged and asked how I was. Didn’t brag about his own success or become proud.”
Flamboyant in the 21st century also influenced the journey of several artists starting their careers. One of them is a singer who ended his career last year Antti tuisku.
Tuisku commented on Kolehmainen’s passing on Monday morning in an Instagram post.
“When I heard during the filming of Idols in 2003 that we would record the finalists together The winds are blowing -song at Maki’s studio, I couldn’t believe my ears. As an insanely big Aikakone fan, it was a really big deal for me,” Tuisku writes.
Tuisku describes Kolehmai as one of the key people who helped him when he started making his first album in 2004.
