The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, which is celebrated this Saturday, allowed us to look at the harsh reality that thousands of citizens of the Region of Murcia suffer, reflected in data such as that the authorities count 4,723 active cases. ; that this year there have already been 2,400 calls for help to telephone number 016; and that 3,00 women are covered by police protection programs against their attackers.
The figures were disclosed by the Government delegate in the Region of Murcia, Francisco Jiménez, on the occasion of the Menina 2023 recognition ceremony, which the Delegation grants to people, organizations and institutions that stand out in their fight against this scourge.
“The integrity and well-being of victims of gender violence cannot be limited exclusively to the acts, hashtags and advertising campaigns that champion this day,” Jiménez warned in any case. And, after calling not to betray the memory of the 52 women murdered this year in Spain at the hands of their partners or ex-partners, he referred to the importance of the “commitment, effort and daily determination shown by professionals and volunteers.” committed to the cause” of eradicating this problem.
Likewise, he detailed that 327 residence and work authorizations have been granted to foreign victims of gender violence; that 1,232 abused women receive the Active Insertion Income; and that 72 women have obtained aid for changes of residence forced by their situation. In addition, he noted that there are already 23 municipalities in the Region that have joined the Viogen system of the Ministry of the Interior to share information, resources and capabilities. “This system already covers the protection of more than 62% of the population of the Region of Murcia and 72% of our territory,” he highlighted. And he encouraged the other 22 councils to incorporate their respective local police forces.
Jiménez described the numbers of people affected in the Community as “desperate”, but recalled that “we must face them without despair, with full confidence in the means, professionals and resources that the Government of Spain makes available to the victims.”
As for the Menina 2023 awards, they went to the College of Opticians and Optometrists of the Region of Murcia, the Illustrious College of Attorneys of Murcia, the artist collective Trazo 6 and the colonel of the Civil Guard in the Jesús Arribas reserve.
The day also left a crossroads of reproaches between PSOE and PP regarding their policies to address this issue. The regional representative of the PP Luz Marina Lorenzo stated that “in the face of the insecurity generated by the disastrous law of ‘only yes is yes’, Fernando López Miras has allocated more than 40 million euros to the fight against gender violence.”
Reproaches between PSOE and PP
He thus referred to the measures of the regional Government, in response to the Secretary of Equality of the PSOE in the Region, Tania Ros, who considered that “it is very worrying that the Popular Party is not capable of standing up to the extreme right on such an issue.” important like this and that is dedicated to whitewashing sexist discourses. He thus alluded to his regional coalition with Vox. Ros also declared that “it cannot be allowed that one in two women suffers or has suffered some type of sexist violence” and that “unfortunately, despite this reality, there are still those who deny sexist violence.”
At the national level, the president of the Popular Party, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, limited the possibility of agreements between his party and the Government of Pedro Sánchez to a single issue: gender violence. «When the independence movement abandons him, don’t look for me. But to agree on sexist violence, you will always find me,” said Feijóo.
