The president of Argentina, Javier Milei, vehemently criticized socialism, this Sunday in Madrid, describing it as “cursed and cancerous”. Furthermore, he accused Begoña Gómez, wife of the president of the Spanish government, Pedro Sánchez, of being “corrupt”. Milei made these statements during an event organized by the Vox party.
“What a bunch of people who got into power. Even when he has a corrupt wife, he gets dirty and takes five days to think about it,” he said in reference to Sánchez.
The Argentine president, who presented himself as a “humble promoter of the ideas of freedom”, called for the end of socialism. He stated that we should never back down in the face of ‘leftists’ because, according to him, they take advantage of the weakest.
Milei also encouraged the “cultural battle”, which he considers necessary for the policies implemented to be lasting and for citizens to defend their freedom in the future. “Let us return to defending the values that made the West great: life, liberty and property,” he called.
Spain summons ambassador for consultations
In response to Milei’s statements, the Spanish government summoned its ambassador to Buenos Aires for consultations. Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares called for a “public apology” from the Argentine leader for words he considers “extremely serious”.
Albares stated that Milei’s behavior took relations between Spain and Argentina to the most serious moment in recent history. “It is unacceptable for a sitting president visiting Spain to insult Spain and the president of the government. It is a frontal attack on our democracy and our institutions.”
Before Albares’ speech, Spanish socialist leaders and ministers expressed disapproval of Milei’s “insults” and “hatred” against Sánchez and his wife on social media. They asked the opposition leader, conservative Alberto Núñez Feijóo, to condemn Milei’s words, which they considered “unacceptable”.
According to the Argentine newspapers Clarin and Spanish El Mundo, it is the second diplomatic clash between the two countries in the last two weeks, when the Minister of Transport, Oscar Puente, implied that the Argentine president consumed “substances”.
An official statement from the Argentine government signaled, at the time, that the Spanish prime minister had more important problems to deal with, such as the corruption accusations against his wife.
