B.and countries want to decide on Tuesday contact restrictions for private meetings and leisure activities in order to curb the expected fifth wave through the Omikron variant. The FAZ has the draft resolution for the Prime Minister’s Conference. It says that restrictions are also necessary for those who have been vaccinated and those who have recovered. “Especially New Year’s Eve celebrations with a large number of people are not justifiable in the current situation. Therefore, from December 28, 2021, private gatherings of vaccinated and convalescent people will only be allowed with a maximum of 10 people. This upper limit applies to private indoor and outdoor meetings. Children up to the age of 14 are exempt from this. “
The already existing contact restrictions for unvaccinated people should therefore remain in force. “For private indoor or outdoor get-togethers in which non-vaccinated and unconcealed people take part, the following still applies: Only members of your own household and a maximum of two people from another household are allowed to meet. Children up to the age of 14 are exempt from this. “
The draft decision also deals with cultural and leisure activities as well as retail. Accordingly, the 2-G model should be retained. Clubs and discos are to be closed according to the plan.
For the Christmas holidays, the Prime Minister and Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) rely on personal responsibility according to the draft. Contacts should then be restricted as far as possible, and vaccinated people should also have themselves tested before the meeting.
“Contact restrictions will almost certainly be part of tomorrow’s agreements,” said Brandenburg’s Prime Minister Dietmar Woidke (SPD) during a digital press conference in Potsdam. The Omikron variant is very worrisome because it would significantly increase the number of infections. Soon “10 million plus X” would be infected with the Omikron variant. “We want to flatten this wave of infections,” said Woidke.
Habeck: We have to act smart
It is not only a question of not letting the burden on the health system become too great, but also of ensuring the “functionality of the critical infrastructure”. The ability to work of companies could be jeopardized if too many employees fell ill. “That will be in the foreground tomorrow,” said Woidke. In addition, it will continue to be about the vaccination campaign. It will be possible to achieve the goal of 30 million vaccinations by Christmas. The Prime Minister’s Conference should also discuss whether the booster vaccinations should soon take place earlier than after five or six months. Berlin’s Senator for Health Dilek Kalayci (SPD) announced on Monday that booster vaccinations should be possible in Berlin after three months instead of the previous five.
As early as Monday morning, the SPD announced that it was relying on additional contact restrictions to curb the rapidly spreading omicron variant of the corona virus – also for those who have been vaccinated and those who have recovered. These should only come into force after the Christmas holidays, said party chairman Lars Klingbeil after the first meeting of the new party executive in Berlin. In addition, he announced resolutions to protect the so-called critical infrastructure in Germany, but did not become more specific.
Klingbeil did not mention a possible lockdown in January. “There are no red lines,” he said, if the spread of the Omikron variant increases and the measures decided up to then prove to be inadequate. “Then all other measures must also be conceivable.”
When protecting critical infrastructure, there are fears that the ability to work of hospitals, police and fire departments, for example, could be endangered – on the one hand by overloading, but also by the fact that employees there are infected themselves or are in quarantine. “There are difficult weeks ahead of us,” said Klingbeil.
With a view to the current demonstrations, Klingbeil said that politicians had to “strongly explain” and convince the necessary measures, but that some had long since “left the soil of democratic discourse”. With the torchlight procession organized by right-wing extremists, it was “wrong to rely on dialogue”. This is where occasions are sought to destabilize the state.
Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck (Greens) also commented. Habeck does not consider a complete lockdown, as his party colleague Janosch Dahmen brought up for discussion, to be necessary. The Federal Minister of Economics said that proposals to completely paralyze private and public life should not be dealt with “lightly”. “If we are smart, we will take differentiated measures.” The Green health politician Dahmen had previously told the German press agency: “In view of the extremely high transferability of Omikron, we will probably not be able to avoid a lockdown after Christmas.”
Söder criticizes traffic light
Bavaria’s Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) meanwhile criticized the corona management of the new federal government. The latest signals from the Ampel coalition are contradictory, said Söder to journalists after a board meeting of his party in Munich. “My impression is that the traffic light is not yet in the correct Corona rhythm and Corona mode.” And further: “It now needs clear text.” To this end, the fundamental question of the legal options must be discussed again. It was an “incredibly serious mistake” not to prolong the epidemic situation. This was the cardinal’s mistake, it had to be discussed again.
