Clooney’s foundation wants to take action against Russian propagandists by issuing arrest warrants. Now Putin ally Dmitri Medvedev is sharply attacking the Hollywood star.
Los Angeles/Moscow – In 2016, Hollywood actor George Clooney and his wife Amal founded the Clooney Foundation for Justice (CFJ). Their aim is to provide free legal aid to victims of human rights violations in over 40 countries around the world. According to their own Home The CFJ advocates for justice “to create a world where human rights are protected and no one is above the law.”
Medvedev threatens Clooney: “Our professional journalists will find him first”
Because the Clooney Foundation wanted to obtain arrest warrants against Russian propagandists, Russia’s former president Dmitry Medvedev with massive threats towards George Clooney and his foundation. Medvedev, currently deputy chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, has already repeatedly attracted attention in the past with offensive attacks against the West.
“A certain mediocre actor named George Clooney has decided to use his foundation to hunt down and persecute Russian journalists around the world,” Medvedev wrote on his account at the weekend. Short message service X.
However, the effort was in vain: “Our professional journalists will find him first. They are very attentive and well-trained people. And they will talk to each other from dusk to dawn,” Medvedev threatened the American. With this statement, which could well be interpreted as a threat of torture, Medvedev was obviously alluding to the 1990s film classic “From Dusk Til Dawn” based on a script by Quentin Tarantino, in which Clooney played one of the main roles.
CFJ employee Neistat: “The propaganda machine became more and more sophisticated and shrill”
Anya Neistat, a Russian-born lawyer and long-time researcher for Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, is responsible for investigating potential Russian war crimes at the Clooney Foundation. In an interview with the US broadcaster Voice of America She explained this week that the foundation is trying to hold Russian propagandists accountable for their role in the war of aggression against Ukraine. Specifically, this involves accusations of incitement to genocide and charges of war propaganda, which is a criminal offense in some countries.
In the interview, Neistat stressed how important she considers the Russian propaganda initiated by the Kremlin in Ukraine War holds – and especially, as she says, in relation to the fact that Russian soldiers are committing war crimes in Ukraine. “As for the willingness of Russian society to accept this propaganda, I believe that the seeds of this propaganda, as you put it, have been planted in this soil for many years. It has, in a sense, trained the minds of Russians and accustomed them to trust what they are told by the television channels they are allowed to watch,” Neistat explained.
According to the CFJ employee, this propaganda was not initiated with the start of the war two years ago, but is rather a continuous process. “And this process was a double result, firstly, the concentration of all information channels in the hands of the state and secondly, the gradual closure of all independent sources of information. If we look at the last 20 years, we see that Russian society has had less and less access to independent sources of news over these 20 years, and the propaganda machine has become more and more sophisticated and shrill,” added Neistat.
While the Kremlin threatens the Clooney Foundation, Steven Seagal is honored
With his latest threat to the Clooney Foundation, Medvedev was apparently following a public statement by Dmitry Peskov, the spokesman for the Russian ruler Wladimir PutinPeskov had commented on the news of the Clooney Foundation’s plans shortly before. In it, Peskov called the CFJ team “insane” and suggested that Russian journalists investigate the motives behind their work.
While Clooney is financing the investigation into Russian crimes, another American actor has just been awarded a medal by Putin: former action film actor Steven Seagal – known from films such as “Machete” and “Maximum Conviction”. Seagal received the so-called Order of Friendship in the Kremlin on Friday.
The actor then thanked the Kremlin for the award with a confused speech in which he accused Ukraine of fascism and Nazism. Seagal stumbled as he read the speech, as if he was not particularly familiar with the text. The now 72-year-old former actor had previously taken on Russian citizenship and is For some time now, it has been part of Kremlin-typical propaganda. (fh)
