A man who drove too fast has to compensate the city of Helsinki for repairing the tree and the street he destroyed in Vallilla.
Man went wild in Helsinki's Vallila on Saturday evening and crashed into a tree.
A 34-year-old man who over-speeded on Sturenkatu at Christmas time in 2021 drove side by side with another car until he lost control of his car and derailed into a tree and another car.
The tree broke and the back of the car and the back door were damaged.
The man claimed that he lost control of his car due to black ice, but according to the court, the road surface was bare and dry at the time of the incident. In addition, the man claimed that the car in the adjacent lane had not given him the opportunity to overtake, but that he had to increase his speed for that reason.
The driver was sentenced to compensation of a good 2,280 euros to the city of Helsinki.
to Helsinki there was work and costs involved, among other things, from crushing the stone, re-laying and re-installing the irrigation pipes, as well as planting a new tree and protecting it.
For example, more than 790 euros accrued to be reimbursed for watering a tree. The insurance company had already reimbursed part of the irrigation costs.
City had accidentally lost nearly six thousand euros, but it had already received more than 3,600 euros in compensation from the insurance. The city demanded compensation from the driver only for the part that was not covered by the insurance.
The district court had sentenced the driver to another 20 daily fines, a total of 420 euros.
The Helsinki Court of Appeal increased the compensation amount for the city to more than 2,280 euros.
