The ranking of the best-selling new cars in Italy divided by segments. Among many reconfirmations and some news, let’s see which models are the favorites of Italian motorists

An end of 2021 is looming with results below expectations, with the Italian car market likely to close below one and a half million registrations, a threshold that, even if reached, would still be well below the results of the last six years, with the exception of course of 2020 undermined by the pandemic. The destabilizing effects of the pandemic have not completely disappeared, on the contrary, they have found an equally painful substitute in the slowdown in production caused by the lack of raw materials. If we add to the picture an ecological transition held back by the lack of long-term strategies and an as yet undefined vision, the results highlight a level of registrations that could go back seven years. There were 104,478 new registrations with a variation of -24.6% on the same 2020 and -30.6% in comparison with November 2019. Overall, 1,371,166 units were registered between January and November, with an increase of +8 , 6% on 2020 and a decline of -22.7% on 2019 (deficit of over 400,000 cars). Segment by segment, here are the ten best-selling cars in November according to Unrae’s calculations.
SEGMENT A: FIAT PANDA, FIAT 500 AND HYUNDAI I10
–
Let’s start with segment A, that of city cars, a market segment that in November weighs 17% of the total market. In terms of numbers, registrations of the “small” cars were 18,196, the queen is always the Fiat Panda with 8,815 units, followed at a considerable distance by its sister Fiat 500, 2,918 units. Following Hyundai i10 (1,295), then Kia Picanto (1,137), Volkswagen up! (1.089), Suzuki Ignis (809), Smart Fortwo (543), Citroen C1 (463), Dacia Spring (416) and Toyota Aygo (341).
SEGMENT B: LANCIA YPSILON, DACIA SANDERO AND CITROEN C3
–
Segment B, that of compact cars, is now strategic for manufacturers as it is the one with the highest specific weight in terms of volumes: 38% in November 2021, with 41,101 registrations. The best-selling compact in Italy is the Lancia Ypsilon with 3,208 registrations, followed by the Dacia Sandero (2,971) and the Citroen C3 (2,673). Following Toyota Yaris Cross (2.657), Renault Clio (1.959), Renault Captur (1.879), Volkswagen Polo (1.866), Opel Corsa (1.677), Fiat 500L (1.611) and Volkswagen T-Cross (1.552).
SEGMENT C: DACIA DUSTER, VOLKSWAGEN T-ROC AND JEEP COMPASS
–
Another weight market segment is the C segment, which includes compact midsize and – above all – SUVs and compact crossovers, always on the rise to the detriment of classic sedans. A segment that in October 2021 is worth 30% of the market with 31,786 registrations. On the top step of the podium is the Dacia Duster with 2,994 registrations followed by the Volkswagen T-Roc (2,420) and the Jeep Compass with 2,197 registrations. Then Jeep Renegade (2.087), Ford Ecosport (2.010), Toyota C-Hr (1.555), Peugeot 3008 (1.334), Nissan Qashqai (1.215), Hyundai Tucson (1.108) and Kia Sportage (1.083).
SEGMENT D: BMW X1, FORD KUGA AND ALFA ROMEO STELVIO
–
Further up we find the D segment, that of the middle-high schools. Again, the classic sedans have now been outclassed by SUVs and crossovers, in line with the overwhelming tastes of motorists. The weight, compared to the total market, in November 2021 is 12% with 13,083 registrations, the best-selling BMW X1 model with 1,232 registrations, followed by the Ford Kuga (807) and the Alfa Romeo Stelvio (801). Then Toyota Rav4 (799), Audi Q3 (604), Audi Q6 (576), Cupra Formentor (505), Mercedes Gla (518), Bmw X3 (511) and Volkswagen Tiguan (430).
SEGMENT E: TESLA MODEL X, MERCEDES GLE AND PORSCHE CAYENNE
–
The E segment is that of luxury models, once the prerogative of large sedans but now densely populated with SUVs, even if some models – especially German ones – keep up. Obviously the relative weight is very low compared to the market – 2% of the total with 2,092 registrations – but each unit sold is very good for the manufacturers. On the top step of the podium we find the Tesla Model Y with 325 registrations, followed by the Mercedes Gle (175) and Porsche Cayenne at 159. Then Range Rover Sport (154), Bmw 5 Series (147), Bmw X5 with equal merit with sister BMW X6 (113), Mercedes Gle Coupé (109), new entry BMW iX (105) and Mercedes E-Class (95).
SEGMENT F: PORSCHE 911, TAYCAN AND MASERATI GHIBLI
–
Finally, the F segment, that of sports cars and much sought-after flagships. Also in this case it is a market segment that counts on small numbers – less than 1% of total sales with 432 registrations – but with great appeal and extremely profitable for car manufacturers. At the top is the stainless Porsche 911 with 126 units registered in November 2021, followed by its sister Porsche Taycan (84) and the Maserati Ghibli (38). Then Porsche Panamera (35), Mercedes S-Class, Ferrari Roma (21), Ferrari F8 (11), Audi A8 (9), Bmw 8 Series Gran Coupé (9) and Lamborghini Urus (9).
