Bloomberg: G7 to meet in Qatar ahead of Ukraine peace conference
The Group of Seven (G7) countries will meet in Qatar ahead of the Ukraine peace conference in Switzerland in June. This is reported by Bloomberg.
National security advisers and senior officials from around the world are set to meet in Doha over the weekend of April 27-28 to discuss plans for a summit on terms of resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict, sources said.
As the agency notes, the meeting of representatives of the G7 and the so-called “Global South” is part of a round of negotiations preparing the ground for the summit in Switzerland. The list of participants for the meeting in the Qatari capital has not yet been confirmed, but Russia was not invited and it is unclear whether China will attend.
In turn, Ukraine’s allies consider the presence of the PRC important for the success of the summit, since Beijing has influence on Moscow. “China is seen as a key participant that will add weight to any agreement, and therefore the question of whether anyone from Beijing will appear at this meeting is crucial,” the material says.
Earlier, Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis said that the peace process in Ukraine is impossible without the participation of Russia. He also reaffirmed Switzerland's commitment to neutrality.
