The Iraqi Minister of Agriculture, Abbas Al-Olaywi, said on Sunday evening that his country’s wheat production will rise during the current year 2024 agricultural season to 6 million tons.
The minister told reporters, on the sidelines of the opening of the 15th session of the Agricultural Week in Iraq, that “preliminary indicators for the agricultural season for the current year indicate that Iraq will reach a production of 6 million tons of wheat, which is a positive indicator.”
Al-Olayawi added, “The rate of wheat production for the past year 2023 amounted to five million and 200 thousand tons, and that the expected increase comes through expanding the agricultural area and using modern irrigation methods, in addition to the rainy season.”
He explained that the Iraqi government is working to achieve self-sufficiency in grains through the use of modern irrigation techniques, as well as expanding the area of agricultural land for various types of fruits and vegetables and exporting the surplus outside the country. This is a policy adopted by the Iraqi government to develop the agricultural sector, support farmers, and pay their dues without delay and support them. With fertilizers and pesticides.
