Iran and Pakistan jointly asked the UN Security Council on Wednesday to take measures against Israel to prevent its “illegal acts” against neighboring countries and diplomatic offices abroad.
In a joint statement, issued after the visit to Pakistan of the Iranian president, Ebrahim Raisi, who today traveled to Sri Lanka, the next stage of his tour, both governments asked the UN body “to prevent the Israeli regime from its adventurism in the region and its illegal acts, attacking its neighbors and targeting foreign diplomatic facilities.
Both governments defended the need for an “immediate and unconditional ceasefire, unhindered humanitarian access to the besieged people of Gaza, the return of displaced Palestinians, as well as ensuring accountability for the crimes being committed by the Israeli regime.” , says the statement.
The visit occurred at a time of high tension in the Middle East after Iran launched a massive attack with more than 300 drones and missiles against Israeli territory last weekend, in retaliation for the bombing attributed to Israel of the Iranian consulate in Damascus on April 1.
This attack was labeled by both parties as an “unacceptable” violation of international law and the UN Charter and “illegal” according to the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, the statement said.
