Bulletin cites “potential danger” for the State, including Porto Alegre; cold waves reach central-southern Brazil
O Inmet (National Institute of Meteorology) issued 2 alerts this Friday (May 24, 2024) for strong storms in the State of Rio Grande do Sul. One of them is for the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre (RS).
Rainfall can reach 50 mm (millimeters) in a single day, along with intense coastal winds of 40 to 60 km/h. The most recent alert from “potential danger” covers the southwest, northwest, center, southeast and northeast of the State.
Under normal conditions, the alert would represent a low risk of power outages and tree branches, flooding and electrical discharges, but cities in Rio Grande do Sul are still recovering from the floods at the beginning of the month.
The other alert concerns temperature drops in the State, with thermometers below 10 °C. Minimum temperatures on the weekend are close to or below zero in the high parts of the mountains and in the Gaucho campaign region.
In Porto Alegre, the minimum temperature is below 10 °C from today until Sunday (May 26), with an even lower thermal sensation. There is also a forecast of frost in Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina.
Cold in the center, southeast and south of Brazil
Inmet also indicates that there is a forecast for intense rain in São Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul and Santa Catarina until Saturday (May 25). The States will receive cold fronts, the first of the year.
The cold air mass of polar origin is the most intense to reach Brazil so far, bringing strong drops in temperature to São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, southern Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso do Sul, and southwest Mato Grosso.
