Hockey|The Court of Appeal found Severi Lahtinen guilty of rape.
Eastern Finland the court of appeals has softened the ice hockey player Severi Lahtinen rape conviction.
The Court of Appeal of Eastern Finland sentenced Lahtinen to 1 year and 10 months in prison for rape instead of the two years sentenced by the district court. In other respects, the Court of Appeal did not change the judgment of the district court.
Lahtinen had demanded that the charge be dismissed in the Court of Appeal.
District court sentenced Lahtinen to two years of unconditional imprisonment in October. According to the district court, Lahtinen raped a sleeping woman in Lahti after the festivals in June 2022. The rape took place in the woman’s apartment, and the sexual contact was unprotected.
The Court of Appeal considered that a fair and in accordance with the prevailing general penal practice, the penalty for the crime attributed to Lahtinen is 1 year and 10 months in prison unconditionally. This means that Lahtinen will go to prison for his act.
SM league club JYP canceled Lahtinen’s contract after the district court’s verdict. Lahtinen had a contract with JYP until spring 2025.
Lahtinen had time to play in JYP for four seasons starting in 2020. Before that, he played in his foster club, Lahti Pelicans.
However, Lahtinen did not remain unemployed for a long time, but with the help of his agent, he soon found a new club in Slovakia.
