The Ice Hockey Association elected a new chairman.
Ice Hockey Federation chose a successor at the federal council meeting on Saturday Harri Nummela. The next chairman of the union was elected Heikki Hietanen.
Hietanen, 64, will begin his term as chairman on January 1, 2024.
Hietanen has recently served as a member of the board of the International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF. The experienced union man also worked as the general secretary of the World Championships in Tampere in recent years. Hietanen has previously also served as CEO of the Ice Hockey League.
The presidential race was a two-way deal. Competing with Hietanen for the position was a former top coach and currently serving on the board of TPS Erkka Westerlund66.
Originally, there was a third candidate for chairman, but Jukka Toivakka withdrew from the race on Thursday, citing lack of energy and time. However, Toivakka will continue on the union’s board until the end of his term.
The current chairman, Harri Nummela, started as the leader of the Jääkieksoliito in January 2016.
The last time, in the presidential search organized in 2015, there were significantly more candidates for the position of the president of the Ice Hockey Federation. Eight years ago, the association had to organize a pre-qualification Kalervo Kummola of the follower.
