In recent years, Sarén talked about his former criminal life in interviews and in a memoir published in 2019 Valuable transport robber – Matti Sarén’s mafia life – in a memoir (Docendo, Crime Time) edited by the author Harri Nykänen.
Sarén assured that he had left the criminal life behind. Before his death, the former professional criminal worked as a peer support person for the Criminal Care Support Foundation.
During his criminal years Among other things, Sarén took part in a theft of valuables in the yard of the Bank of Finland’s Turku office in February 2007. The robbers got around 1.5 million euros.
Partly the same perpetrators, including Saré, planned to rob a money transport in Liedo in October of the same year, but the police stopped the group before the robbery. The police had been secretly following them for several months.
The district court sentenced Sarén to 9.5 years in prison for the robbery of the Bank of Finland and the attempted robbery of Lieto. However, the Court of Appeal rejected the charge for Lieto’s attempted robbery and reduced the sentence by a good year.
According to the Court of Appeal, Lieto’s case did not progress to the stage of attempted robbery as defined in the Criminal Code before the authorities stopped the group’s actions. At that time, the preparation of such a crime had not yet been made illegal.
The case accelerated the reform of the law. Since 2013, for example, the preparation of murder, aggravated assault and aggravated robbery have been punishable.
Saré also participated in the attempted robbery of a valuable transport vehicle in Salo in February 2016. At that time, the foursome dressed in overalls stopped the valuable transport on the Turku highway.
A car’s windshield was shot in connection with an attempted robbery. The driver was forced out of the car by threats.
The men tried to blow open the side of the valuable transport truck, but the explosive did not go off. They were left without a catch.
The Supreme Court sentenced Sarén’s act to a generous six years in prison. He was released a few years ago.
In the last year of his life, he visited Ukraine, which was the target of Russia’s military actions. He said on his social media accounts and in interviews that he participated in taking supplies to the Ukrainians.
