The professional association of hoteliers Hostelor has taken the initiative to revive small businesses on Corredera Street and adjacent streets and is preparing a complete report on around twenty establishments that are closed to enable their reopening. Architects and engineers will collaborate selflessly and carry out an assessment of the state of the ground floor, the renovation that will be necessary and its cost. This is based on the economic activity that is considered most appropriate for each one, according to its characteristics, and the necessary adaptations to comply with current regulations.
This was announced to LA VERDAD by the president of Hostelor, Jesús Abellaneda, who specified that the association’s intention is for those interested in activating these businesses to have all the necessary information when executing the investment and to be eligible for aid from the Institute of Promotion for the economic reactivation of the old town. He considered that the next call, which will be the third, should focus on facilitating the opening of new stores, Abellaneda said, to generate more jobs. “We want to enhance Corredera Street, make it more attractive by recovering life with traditional shops and bars, and for that to be its differentiating element.” Hostelor has called its project ‘New open shopping center. Lorca historic center’.
“He recognized the difficulty of the mission, because they will have to locate the owners of the premises, some closed for decades, and for them to allow access to be able to make the personalized report.” According to Abellaneda, in recent months there have been new openings, “small pulses of recovery, but the effort behind it is titanic” and “we have to take more ambitious and forceful steps.”
The definitive push
The Autonomous Community has recently approved subsidies worth 500,000 euros that will be distributed among the 20 projects that have been approved in the second call of the aid program included in the Master Plan for the recovery of the historic center. One of the beneficiary businesses is the historic Manzanares jewelry store, located on Corredera Street, whose owners will undertake a comprehensive renovation of the business at the beginning of 2025, coinciding with its 50th anniversary. “We had planned to renovate the premises, update it while maintaining our identity, and the help has been the final push to do so,” the manager, Juan Manzanares, told LA VERDAD.
The president of the employers’ association considers the third line of subsidies to reactivate the historic center “urgent”
The president of the Ceclor employer’s association, Juan Jódar, applauds Hostelor’s initiative and believes that “we must work to make the third line of subsidies a reality this year” because there are projects that have not obtained financing and “cannot be left in a drawer.” ». He adds that “it is urgent” to continue boosting commerce following the guidelines of the Master Plan, after the regional government declared in 2023 the recovery of the historic center as a regional strategic project.
