Iranian state television confirmed that the country’s president Ebrahim Raisi was in the helicopter returning from Azerbaijan, on an official trip to inaugurate a dam, and suffered an accident this Sunday morning (19).
According to official information from the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), the aircraft crashed while trying to land in the Varzaqa region. Due to bad weather, help had not yet been able to reach the scene.

The agency further explains that a “massive search operation involving 16 teams was underway to locate the helicopter, but teams had still not located the crash site after nearly five hours.”
“The esteemed president and the company were returning on board some helicopters and one of the helicopters was forced to make a landing due to bad weather and fog,” Interior Minister Ahmad Vahidi confirmed to state television.
The delegation included the Iranian Foreign Minister, Hossein Amirabdollahian, the governor of the Iranian province of East Azerbaijan, the religious leader Hojjatoleslam Al Hashem, among other authorities.
Iranian law provides that, in the event of the president’s death, the vice president assumes power and calls new elections within six months. The deputy is Mohammad Mokhber.
