A survivor was rescued today, Saturday, after spending five days under the rubble of a building that collapsed on Monday in South Africa, which was considered a “miracle” that led to rescue workers applauding.
“It is the miracle we all hoped for,” local government leader Alan Winde announced on the “X” platform today, Saturday.
Colin Diener, head of rescue operations, told the press, “When we descended near the (concrete) slab that we had removed (…), we heard the voice of someone inside and we stopped all operations with heavy tools.”
He added that rescue workers spoke with the survivor, who responded.
Diner added, “He told us that there was something heavy on his legs, and this worries us after such a long period” under the rubble.
The man was finally extracted after hours of efforts and was taken to a hospital immediately.
At least 13 people were killed when this building under construction collapsed in the city of George on the coast of South Africa on Monday afternoon.
When the tragedy struck, a team of 81 people were on site.
Since then, rescue teams have been working tirelessly to try to find survivors.
So far, 29 people, some in very critical condition, have been pulled out alive from under the rubble.
39 people are still missing.
The causes of the collapse are still unknown. The project aimed to build 42 apartments and was approved by the municipality last July.
