The name Hagure Idol: Jigoku-Hen will not say anything to most, but in Japan is a very famous manga, in certain circles. In 2014, it began its publication in the magazine Bessatsu Manga Goraku from Nihonbungeishawhich then finished publishing in December 2014 and the series moved on to the magazine Manga Goraku Specialalso by Nihonbungeisha in March 2015. The story, defined as a “sexy comedy” but which is actually far more thrust than we would expect from such a harmless termspeaks of a young karateka, Misora Haebaru, an eighteen-year-old girl who moves from Okinawa to Tokyo to enter show business in hopes of financially supporting her family. But she is deceived and finds herself becoming one gravure idol (a sort of pin-up model, but even more naked), forced to wear obscene clothes and also almost forced by her producer to act in adult films. Rightly opposed to this decision, she will oppose her agency’s will of her and begin competing instead in underground martial arts tournaments and other similar atrocities to keep her honor intact and still repay the producer.
The series has reached 15 published volumes, in Japan and in the United States, but has never arrived in Italy. Last year, the manga was preparing to enter his climaxbut perhaps we will never see the conclusion, or the mangaka, Rui Takato, will fall back on an emergency ending, this is because retirement is approaching for him… for a rather peculiar reason.
Without going around it so much, come on Twitter the mangaka simply wrote that in the very near future he will retire and end Hagure Idol: Jigoku-hen. Usually, this happens when the series are no longer popular with the public, are canceled for low sales or to make room for other series. Others go on hiatus due to the ill health of their creators, such as NANA or Hunter x Hunter. This time, however, the decision comes directly from the creator and health has nothing to do with it. In fact, the reason is that, in his words, “Due to family circumstances that have arisen in the house I live in, for a long time I will not be able to draw a monthly manga full of breasts and sex.“
Takato thanked the fans for the support given to him, also celebrating with the magazine that publishes it because the manga has reached 100 chapters published. He announced that this decision had been in the works for some time, and that he already has some ideas on how to reinvent himself. In 2020, the Japanese success of this series had even inspired a live action series.
