The European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) confirmed that fraud operations involving European Union funds in 2023 exceeded one billion euros.
OLAF’s main mission is to investigate possible cases of fraud and corruption involving funds from the European Union budget, and then transmit its findings to the competent European and national authorities.
During the year 2023, OLAF recommended that the competent authorities recover an amount of 1.04 billion euros, in addition to the investigation team tracking down 209 million euros that were at risk of being misused but had not yet been spent. Over the course of the entire year 2023, OLAF opened 190 new investigations after launching 1,178. A preliminary investigation has already closed 265 of them.
